Passport Overland

Passport Overland documents vehicle-navigable routes through remote and undeveloped terrain. Six continental traverses are currently documented, covering approximately 9,300 km of route across the continental interior, coastal margins, and mountain divide.

Route data is compiled from direct observation. Each route has been traversed in full at least once; most have been traversed multiple times across different seasons. Ford depths, surface conditions, gradient, clearance requirements, and obstacle counts are measured, not estimated. Where seasonal variation affects route specifications, the range is noted.

Reference documents supplement the route guides with technical procedures for vehicle recovery, navigation in areas where onboard systems do not function, surface and structural assessment, and seasonal condition data.

Routes are updated as conditions change. Road surfaces degrade and occasionally improve. Bridges fail. Fords shift. Vegetation advances and recedes. The data published here reflects the most recent observation at each segment. Observation dates are noted in the route details.

The routes form a loose network across the continent. Several share termini. Connector tracks between routes exist but are not formally documented. The network is not comprehensive. Large areas of the continent have not been surveyed. Additional routes will be documented as they are traversed.

Six routes documented. Six reference documents published. Route network covers the western coast, intermountain interior, continental divide, interior lowland, eastern seaboard, and gulf lowland. Survey ongoing.
